10/21/2011 : “Taking the Bull by the Horns”

ErinLast week I had the enlightening experience of lead teaching. For three days I had the entire classroom to myself; the schedule, the curriculum, and the safety and learning of all of my students. While I was extremely nervous and uneasy at first, I realized the second the bell rang that this is where I’m supposed to be. I can’t tell you how amazing a feeling like that is. All my anxiety melted away and I let my passion and knowledge from what I’ve learned thus far from Denver Teacher Residency shine through.

Over the three days, I had several people come in and observe me, DTR administration, mentor teachers from my host school Gust, and instructors of mine from University of Denver. I had eight people visit me in one day! This was overwhelming at first but once I took the bulls by the horn and embraced why they were there, I was fine. I know how supported I am in being a resident with DTR and I know that any criticism or feedback I receive is constructive because DTR wants me to be the best that I can be.

This program has really begun to prepare me and make me feel comfortable with teaching because I know I can ask for help when needed, and I know that I will be so prepared and effective when I have my own room next year. I feel blessed to be a part of this program and am actually looking forward to my next two-week lead teaching in December.
