Hi, I’m Becky and I’m ecstatic to share my story with you on the DTR blog! After I dropped out of med school, I was completely lost as to what I wanted to do with my life. So I left the country and had my first experience teaching – in South Korea. Leaving my comfort zone and experiencing Asia turned my life in a completely different direction. At 32, I’ve already pursued six distinct career paths: medicine, teaching abroad, marketing, non-profit work, public health administration, and small business management.

After years of searching, I have finally found what I will be able to call my profession… and Denver Teacher Residency is my portal to that future. When I found DTR online and applied, I just crossed my fingers that my background wasn’t too mottled for the type of candidate they were seeking to teach in DPS. The allure of a master’s degree combined with in-classroom experience seemed too good to be true, given my lack of training in the field (shhh – I am still unsure of myself on a daily basis).

The students at Henry Middle School, where I am currently assigned (in a 7th grade math classroom), consistently allay those self-doubts. And my mentor teacher, Tiffany Templeton, supports me more than I ever thought a friend or colleague could. While I wade through the rigor of a steep learning curve and master’s coursework, I can only concentrate on how lucky I am to have found a career that makes me so happy. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences through this blog, and promise to be honest about my struggles and share my and the students’ successes.
