I’m Katherine Ketter and I’m a proud member of the Denver Teacher Residency Cohort 2. Taking with me all of my experience as a resident, I’m immersed in my first year of teaching 3rd grade at Valdez Elementary. Escuela Valdez is a dual-language school in the Highlands neighborhood. I teach all day in English and work in a collaborative partnership with a Spanish-speaking counterpart. I am grateful for the support and high expectations of both teachers and students at Valdez.
I joined DTR because I knew that I wanted to learn to teach with a program that had similar values about education to my own. I was attracted to the focus on a quality, equitable education specifically for students in urban public schools. My residency year was a humbling process where I gained the skills and experience that I rely on as I venture off into my own classroom!
Before joining DTR, I worked in outdoor education and service-learning programs. While I love the lakes in Minneapolis (my hometown), I’ve come to love the dryness of Colorado. I like to spend my time hiking in the mountains, running city parks, and cooking nutritious food. For now, I’m trying to regain the essential life-work balance that seems to elude many first year teachers.
