My name is Kelly D’Aniell, I was born and raised in Denver, CO and grew up in Denver Public Schools. I chose Denver Teacher Residency because to me it was like returning home. I love DPS – it is such a diverse district with so many opportunities and so much culture. To me, there’s nothing like it. My residency is at Grant Middle School in sixth-grade math (with the best lead teacher ever).

I started my bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University and finished it at Colorado State University with a degree in Statistics. Some of you reading this probably just got a little nauseous at the idea of statistics which is exactly why I ultimately decided to become a math teacher. I love math – I love how concrete and logical it is and how it helps me solve and think through so many things. I want kids to have this love for math too, instead of being scared of it, and I want them to feel empowered by it. Each class of students I work with has been through so many things in their lives that I want to create a world away from all of that. I want students to feel like when they come to my class nothing else matters and for a while they don’t have to think about their outside troubles. When students come to my class I want them to be free.

My perspective is unique because I was raised in DPS and I’m a minority. I can relate to a lot of the kids differently and I share some of the hardships they have faced – this is important in giving students what they need. To me, 95% of this job is simply giving these students a chance to succeed.
