ELIGIBILITY
Who can become a Resident in the Denver Teacher Residency (DTR)?
- The DTR seeks applicants who have demonstrated excellence in their professional and/or academic endeavors. Applicants may be career changers, college graduates, paraprofessionals, or other educators looking to become a certified classroom teacher.
What kind of teacher can I become through the Denver Teacher Residency?
- DTR prepares aspiring teachers in the following areas:
- K-5 General Education in English and/or Spanish
- K-5 Special Education in English and/or Spanish
- 6-12 Mathematics
- 6-12 Science
What are the eligibility requirements for the Denver Teacher Residency?
- Elementary Education applicants (will earn certification in grades K - 6)
- Hold a bachelors' degree by no later than June 2011
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (preferred minimum GPA)
- Submit a passing score report in either the PLACE (elementary education #01) or PRAXIS II (elementary education content knowledge #0014)
- Submit a complete online Phase One DTR application
- Secondary Mathematics applicants (will earn certification in grades 6 - 12)
- Hold a bachelors' degree by no later than June 2011
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (preferred minimum GPA)
- Either:
- Submit a passing score report in either the PLACE (mathematics #04) or PRAXIS II (mathematics #0061)
OR
- 24 undergraduate credit hours in mathematics content. Click here for more details about the credit hour requirements.
- Submit a complete online Phase One DTR application
- Secondary Science applicants (will earn certification in grades 6 - 12)
- Hold a bachelors' degree by no later than June 2011
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (preferred minimum GPA)
- Either:
- Submit a passing score report in either the PLACE (science #05) or PRAXIS II (general science #0435)
OR

Am I eligible for the Denver Teacher Residency if I have a teaching license from another state or in a different area than the those offered by DTR?
- No, the Denver Teacher Residency is designed for aspiring teachers who do not yet have a teaching license. Applicants with a teaching license from another state, please contact the Colorado Department of Education to learn how to apply for a Colorado teaching license.
Do I have to be a Colorado resident to be eligible for the Denver Teacher Residency?
- No, our program does not have any state residency requirements. Applicants living in all 50 states are welcome to apply.
What if I want to become a Denver Public School teacher, but the DTR is not a good fit for me?
