PROGRAM OVERVIEW

How long is the program?
  • Five years, one year as a Resident and four years as a teacher within a high-needs Denver Public School.
What grades can Residents teach?
  • During the residency year, Residents will be partnered with a Lead Teacher matching the area of certification each Resident pursues. Residents pursuing an elementary certification will be partnered with a Lead Teacher in grades Kindergarten through five. Residents pursuing a secondary mathematics or science certification will be partnered with a mathematics or science teacher in grades six through twelve.
What does a typical week look like in the life of a Resident?
  • Four days a week are spent in a DPS school, learning and teaching alongside a Lead Teacher. One full day a week is spent with fellow Residents participating in the University of Denver Master's seminar. Additionally, one Saturday per month and one weekday evening are spent in the DU Master's seminar.
What are the DPS host school sites?
  • Host school sites are high-needs schools within DPS. For the 2010-2011 Residency, host school sites are Archuleta Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Gust Elementary, Knapp Elementary, McMeen Elementary, Montclair Elementary, and Munroe Elementary. Host school sites for the 2011-2012 Residency have not yet been determined.
Will all Residents receive a job within Denver Public Schools?
  • Residents who successfully complete the Residency year will be offered a contract to teach within DPS.
How are Residents and Lead Teachers matched?
  • DTR is responsible for matching Residents with Lead Teachers, and is committed to successful partnerships. Before pairing decisions are made, Residents and Lead Teachers have the opportunity to meet and interact in order to help us make the best possible matches.
What type of license will I receive?
  • All Residents will receive an alternative teaching license. Once they obtain full-time teaching positions, Residents will work to earn a professional license by meeting DPS' expectations for new-teacher effectiveness and development.
