The Denver Teacher Residency program is highly responsive to the needs of the district. Urban school districts face a couple distinct challenges: meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse student population and reducing high teacher turnover. Nearly 50% of new teachers nationwide leave in their first five years, citing lack of preparation as the number one reason.
DTR is designed to help you meet these challenges head on by giving you instruction, practical classroom experience, guidance and district-specific background to succeed in a DPS classroom.
- Personalized instruction: During your residency year, teach and learn in a high-needs Denver Public Schools classroom alongside a skilled mentor teacher.
- Shared experience: Share and learn in a group of 50 residents (4-8 in other classrooms at your host school site) and a network of DTR alumni.
- Targeted coursework: Use tailored elementary education (with a focus on Linguistically Diverse and Special Education) or secondary education (mathematics or science) coursework to gain knowledge of the students, structure and people in DPS.
